All work at Austin Health involving the conduct, management or containment of genetically modified organisms requires prior approval from our Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
The IBC is constituted by Austin Health with the authority to assess, review and approve all dealings involving genetically modified organisms at Austin Health. This includes use in both animals and humans.
The committee has been established within the guidelines prepared by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR). The IBC is also responsible for annual inspections of the Physical Containment Facilities on Austin Health campuses, and for preparing an annual report of its activity for the OGTR.
