Recognising patient deterioration

Improved monitoring of sick patients in hospitals has been a major rationale for the development of intensive care units. Authors Bates & Zimlichman discuss how technologies - ehealth records, sensors, mobile devices and analytics - could be introduced to enhance the recognition of patient's physiological deterioration. However "to implement these interventions effectively in the complex environments in healthcare, we will have to pay careful attention to sociotechnical factors, as they can trump even the best technologies". Legal marijuana and paediatric exposure: ED visits

Unsocial work hours cause social stress

The latest Australian Work and Life Index (AWALI) national report found regular evening/night work is associated with the greatest negative impact on women's work. Regularly working Sundays is clearly associated with higher work-life interference.

More than 2600 Australians working in a range of industries across the nation were interviewed. 62% worked standard weekday hours, while 30% regularly worked Saturdays and 18% regularly worked Sundays.

Report author Dr Skinner states "our findings directly contest and contradict the notion that most people now operate in a 24/7 economy in which standard working hours no longer exist and that people choose to work long and non-standard hours because it suits them."

Rapid vs gradual weight loss

Researchers from the University of Melbourne and the Weight Control Clinic at Austin Health explored the commonly held belief that those who lose weight quickly also regain weight at a fast rate. In this randomized controlled trial, 200 participants were assigned to either a gradual weight loss or rapid weight loss programme. The study concludes that the "rate of weight loss does not affect the proportion of weight regained within 144 weeks. These findings are not consistent with present dietary guidelines which recommend gradual over rapid weight loss, based on the belief that rapid weight loss is more quickly regained."
