Spinal cord injury & exercise
|
|
"There are anecdotal reports of adverse events (AEs) associated with exercise in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and consequent concern by people with SCI and their providers about potential risks of exercise." A systematic review of studies undertaken between 1970-2011 has established "there is no evidence to suggest that cardiovascular exercise done according to guidelines and established safety precautions is harmful."

Orthopaedic app for best practice
|
|
A new app has been developed to direct the treatment of common orthopaedic problems including rotator cuff tears, distal radius fractures and knee osteoarthritis treatments. Based on substantial reviews by an expert panel of orthopaedic leaders established by The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the information in the app provides the user with recommended evidence-based treatment options. The app is free and further modules are in development.

Robotic walker – new invention for stroke rehabilitation
|
|
Survivors of stroke or other neurological conditions require physical therapy to regain their motor functions and a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Faculty of Engineering has invented a robotic walker to assist patients and physiotherapists during rehabilitation sessions. Using body sensors for gait information and a force sensor to detect user intent, the robotic walker allows the patient to practice walking on the ground instead of on a treadmill.

Ebola visualisation tool

"Researchers around the world are understandably working in haste to come up with a treatment for the Ebola infection. To help with that goal, a team of scientists at Johns Hopkins University just unveiled a free online tool that helps to visualise Ebola gene mutations and how they affect the virus's protein structure, as well as epitopes, binding sites on the surface of the proteins."

Bacteria on mobiles and iPads – infection control
|
|
Personal mobile devices including smartphones, iPads and tablet computers are increasingly being used in hospitals at the point-of-care. In a recent study 64% of inpatient-use devices were contaminated with MRSA . Other resistant pathogens including VRE and pseudomonas were also found highlighting the need for healthcare personnel to be aware of the infection control risks when using these devices.

Guidelines for taking clinical images on personal devices
|
|
What constitutes appropriate use when taking and transmitting clinical images on personal mobile devices? The Australian Medical Association has released a guide for doctors and medical students outlining the key ethical and legal issues when using images in the clinical care setting.
The guide defines what a clinical image is and addresses the issues of consent, storage, transmission, security, access and privacy of the patient's medical record.

Christmas hours in the Library

From Monday 1st December - Friday 9th January the Library will not be staffed between 5pm-6pm.
Staff will be available 8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday.
Over the Christmas period the Library will not be staffed from Wednesday 24th December - Friday 3rd January inclusive. |
