The Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) statement is designed to "provide a framework for best practice in respect of the care of critically ill patients at the end of life in Australia and New Zealand and provide strong support to intensive care staff involved in the care of these patients and their families."

Recent research to estimate the annual health services cost of running the Australian National Hand Hygiene Initiative (NHHI) found public hospitals carried the majority of intervention costs (65%). The authors note "the costs of implementing infection control programmes are rarely estimated in sufficient detail for confident decisions about resource allocation to emerge." Most of the intervention costs related to the time required for auditing hand hygiene compliance and the delivery of education and training.

Safety checklists in medicine are designed to identify a potential error before it results in harm to a patient. The World Health Organization (WHO) safety checklist has been widely implemented in surgical practice since 2008 but it is not routinely used for invasive medical procedures in endoscopy, bronchoscopy suites or catheterisation laboratories. The authors implemented a modified WHO checklist for a cardiac catheterisation laboratory resulting in a significant increase in staff use of the safety tool and demonstrated improvement in patient safety.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) has released evidence-based guidelines which are the first to incorporate DSM-5 and the new disorder of ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder). The Guidelines present a special focus on Anorexia Nervosa across the lifespan with a section on severe and enduring cases.

"This report presents a comparison of the mortality outcomes and cancer characteristics for two populations: those invited to screen in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) in 2006-2008, and those of a similar age who had not been invited to screen in that time period. Of the 2006-2008 bowel cancer diagnoses in these two groups, non-invitees were found to have a 15% higher risk of dying from bowel cancer than NBCSP invitees, and bowel cancers diagnosed in non-invitees were more likely to be at a more-advanced stage. These outcomes demonstrate that the NBCSP is contributing to reducing morbidity and mortality from bowel cancer in Australia. The report findings also suggest that the screening test has a high degree of accuracy."

Providing evidence-based advice on the care of healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies, this guideline makes new recommendations regarding choosing place of birth, care during the latent first stage of labour, transfer of care, fetal assessment and monitoring during labour and management of the third stage of labour.
