- Heart Health Month highlights research of cardiology department
28 February 2022
Cardiac research has long been a focus of Austin Health, this Heart Health Month we’d like to tell you about some exciting research we’re undertaking.
Director of Cardiology, A/Prof Omar Farouque said “In the past 12 months, we’ve seen a stream of great outcomes for patients as a result of research undertaken right here at Austin Health.”
One project of note is research being undertaken in the field of cardio-oncology by Dr Alexandra Murphy.
“Due to the growing population of cancer survivors and their high frequency of cardiovascular disease we are facing a Cardio-Oncology epidemic,” Dr Murphy said.
“The complex management of these patients necessitates specialised services and there is a call to action from international societies to develop co-ordinated Cardio-Oncology services.
Dr Farouque said “Dr Murphy has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to continue research in this field at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York. On behalf of the entire cardiology department, can I congratulate Dr Murphy and wish her all the best as she heads to New York later this year.
