As National Volunteer Week (20-26 May) commences, we turn our attention to individuals like Donna, whose commitment to service embody the spirit of volunteerism.

Donna has been a dedicated volunteer for Austin Health since 2016.

Living part time in both Australia and Hong Kong, Donna generously dedicates her time to two vital roles within the organisation. She serves as a companionship volunteer to patients in Ward 12 at the Repat campus, while also contributing remotely as a Document Reviewer.

"For me, volunteering is important because it gives me extra purpose to interact with people in vulnerable situations and make my day become more productive," shares Donna, reflecting on her motivation for dedicating her time to volunteer work.

Donna's volunteer roles are as diverse as they are impactful. Onsite at Repat, she lends her empathetic ear and comforting presence to patients, often supporting them during their most vulnerable moments.

"I encourage patients to be more active by touring Repat in a wheelchair, doing some exercise and self-massage at the gardens, having a chat and so many more activities to maximise their recovery," Donna explains.

Donna's contributions extend beyond the hospital walls. As a Document Reviewer, she provides valuable insights and feedback on documents, ensuring clarity and accessibility for all readers.

What sets Donna apart is not just her willingness to volunteer, but the profound impact she has on those around her.

“Through volunteering, I am contributing in some way to improving our community. I believe that I am making a difference because I get positive feedback from staff and I have witnessed gratitude from patients.”

“I have learnt to be able to adapt to different situations and personalities and contribute in a team environment. I can work closely with diverse individuals and staff to gain deeper insight into their experiences.”

Donna says that her Volunteer uniform (purple vest) has been a great way for her to have her own identity at Austin Health with staff, patients, and their families easily recognising her as non-clinical support.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, Donna's story is a testament to the transformative power of volunteerism, and the profound impact it can have on the community.

"To those considering volunteering with Austin Health, I would advise anyone interested to be open-minded and passionate.”

“I have had an amazing experience volunteering with Austin Health. It has been more rewarding than I expected.”
