Austin Health doctor wins top state prize

12 September 2024

Congratulations to Dr Jessica Spurio who has taken out the Victorian Junior Doctor of the Year award by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria.

This prestigious award seeks to honour individuals who have significantly enriched the field of prevocational medical education whether through groundbreaking research, transformative leadership, impactful advocacy, or other noteworthy endeavours.

“To win this award is a huge honour and an acknowledgement of the collective efforts of the HMO society. I am very grateful for the support from my team, medical workforce and the whole of Austin Health,” says Jess.

Jess, a PGY2 Doctor, is completing rotations in surgery and our Intensive Care Unit and serves as the Vice President of the Austin HMO Society, an important role in representing peers and advocating for the education, training and wellbeing of Austin Health junior doctors.

“I’ve loved having the opportunity to advocate for my peers and foster a positive, supportive training environment. It is really gratifying and rewarding to see that this work has been recognised,” explains Jess.

Medicine is always a career she saw herself in due to the impact she can have on others.

“I was drawn to a career in medicine by the opportunity and privilege to make a meaningful impact on peoples’ lives, along with the dynamic and challenging nature of the work.

“I love working in diverse teams in a field that’s always evolving. I’m passionate about contributing to medical education, mentoring and advocacy.”

Jess intends to continue her involvement in medical education and teaching as they are areas that she is really passionate about. Alongside her clinical work, she also aims to continue to pursue roles in leadership and advocacy, with a focus on improving training experiences and fostering a supportive environment for her colleagues.

“The voice of the junior medical staff is very important within Austin Health, and I am grateful for Jessica’s work in this capacity and proud of her achievements. Jessica was nominated for this award by Rebecca Wong, the MEU Supervisor of our HMOs. This award means that Jess will now be considered for a national award, and I am sure you will all join me in wishing Jess success in the national awards consideration,” says A/Prof Kerryn Ireland-Jenkin, Medical Director Medical Workforce Unit and Deputy Chief Medical Officer.

Please join us in congratulating Jess on her achievement.
