28 Februrary 2025
For the second year, Dietetics, Food Services and Pharmacy are supporting our Muslim patients to observe Ramadan fasting during their inpatient stay, should they wish to fast, and if this is medically feasible.
From around 28 February to 30 March 2025, Muslim patients wishing to observe Ramadan fasting have the option to receive nutritionally balanced meals to eat before sunrise (suhoor) and after sunset (iftar). Many patients have reported that they traditionally break their fast at sunset with dates, therefore these will be provided with the evening meal.
“Austin Health recognises the significance of Ramadan for our Muslim patients and is committed to supporting their needs during this holy month,” says Hina Ashiyana, Operations Coordinator Patient Food Services.
“Our Food Services team is providing meal options that align with fasting schedules, ensuring that patients can access nutritious and nourishing meals at the appropriate times. Ramadan Kareem!”
Janice Poon, Senior Dietitian says she is pleased that we can support patients who wish to observe fasting during Ramadan.
“We are formalising our processes so that this can become business as usual, as we continue to shape our health service to reflect the needs of our community” she says.
Where possible, some patients may prefer to avoid medication doses during the hours that they are fasting.
Simone Taylor, Senior Pharmacist, says that Muslim patients have asked that their healthcare teams partner with them to manage their medicines during Ramadan.
“Different patients want to celebrate this special time in different ways. If Muslim patients are unwell, they can be exempt from fasting, but many still decide to fast to feel connected with their family and community,” says Simone.
“Even though patients would not choose to be in hospital, hopefully this initiative helps them feel that they can still join in this important celebration.”
Austin Health would like to wish our Muslim patients, staff and community Ramadan Mubarak!
