- Help transform our Spinal Unit on 3 North
25 October 2024
At Austin Health, our Victorian Spinal Cord Service (VSCS) provides life-changing care and support to patients who come to us from across Victoria, Tasmania, and the Riverina district in New South Wales. Corey Hogan, a young man from regional NSW is one of them.
Corey’s life was turned upside down when, at just 22, an accident left him quadriplegic. His journey of recovery has been long and challenging, involving months of intensive care, rehabilitation, and time in our Spinal Ward.
For Corey, the hospital became his home for months. During this time, the environment around him played a crucial role in his healing, both physically and emotionally.
“Being in the Spinal Ward was tough. I’m not someone who struggles with my mental health, but being stuck inside for so long makes it hard.”
This Christmas, our fundraising appeal is focused on enhancing two key spaces in our Spinal Unit, ensuring patients and their families have an environment that promotes both physical and emotional healing. With your support, we will create:
A patient lounge: A welcoming space with new furniture, artwork, and areas for wheelchairs and hospital beds.
A peaceful outdoor retreat: A calming garden area with plants, seating, and nature-inspired murals.
Research shows that exposure to green spaces and nature can significantly boost mental health and aid in recovery. These new spaces will provide moments of peace and tranquility during what can be an incredibly challenging time for patients and their loved ones.
Your donation will help create these healing environments, offering patients and families a much-needed break from the clinical setting.
