Remembrance Day at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital

Today, we gathered at the Remembrance Garden at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital to mark Remembrance Day—a solemn occasion to honour and remember the service personnel who gave their lives while serving in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions.

Originally observed on the anniversary of the Armistice that ended hostilities with Germany in World War I (WWI), Remembrance Day continues to be a time for reflection, gratitude, and commemoration.

The Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, which opened in 1941, has a proud legacy of caring for veterans. This heritage of service remains central to our care.

The ceremony was opened by Cameron Goodyear, CEO (Interim), who welcomed staff and guests.

“We are an organisation that provides essential care and veterans are a significant component, both in the past, present and the future.”

"As we join together today, we will have our own memories of family and friends who have served this country. We think of those who served in WWI and were cared for here. Also, Veterans from conflicts that followed.”

A highlight of the service was the unveiling of a new mosaic by Artist in Residence, Simon Normand, commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Red Cross in Australia. This addition joins the other mosaics on site, symbolising history and heritage, and highlighting our ongoing commitment to honouring those who served.

Lest we forget.
